How can I say this? Simple! It is the truth and I am about to enlighten you, excite you and make you very very angry about those entities that have kept your money from you for all these years. Everything you have been told about Unclaimed Money and Unclaimed Property is WRONG! Statements by unclaimed property offices or online services about unclaimed property and unclaimed money that you may have read and thought were accurate. WRONG: Search our national database online for the unclaimed property in the USA. Or.. A single, easy to use website to search nationally for your unclaimed property.
THE TRUTH: There are NO online databases that contain ALL the unclaimed property in the USA. Unclaimed Property is reported and collected primarily through each individual State in the USA and the States do NOT share "combine" their records with other States in order to form one all inclusive database.
WRONG: If you live in California, then any unclaimed property that you would be able to claim would be filed with that government office.
THE TRUTH: Unclaimed Property is turned over to the State UCP office that corresponds to the last know address of the named account owner. If the account owner moved from one state to another without notifying the UCP Holder, then the state receiving the property will be different from the one you live in now. If the Holder does not have a mailing address for you, it will be reported to the State in which the Holder is doing business, not necessarily the state where you reside.
WRONG: You can search our online database for free to identify all the unclaimed money that you can claim. This relates primarily to commercial/non-government sites.
THE TRUTH: The search you are conducting will NOT include more than 20% of ALL the Unclaimed Property in the USA and it will only provide you with limited information "FOR FREE" excluding the most important information. The last known address of the account owner, thus you will not know for sure if the money is owed to you or to someone with your same name. In America the likelihood of someone having the same FIRST and LAST name as you is 9 to 1! There are a lot of Carl Williams out there not to mention the thousands of John Smith or Joe Jones. :-) In order for you to actually see the most important information, you will HAVE TO PAY A FEE to the commercial site.
WRONG: There is over $35 Billion Dollars in Unclaimed Property in the USA today.
THE TRUTH: Not even close. There is actually over $1 Trillion Dollars in Unclaimed Property, Unclaimed Money, Unclaimed Stock, Unclaimed Insurance Benefits, Unclaimed Pensions, Uncashed Checks, Unclaimed settlements, etc. etc. etc. etc.
WRONG: The State UCP government office is in business to return the unclaimed money it receives to its rightful owners. Or, The states have implemented active outreach programs designed to reunite unclaimed property owners with their lost or forgotten assets.
THE TRUTH: Nice thought! Reality Check! The UCP office holding your money, on average, returns less than 20% of the accounts turned over to it each year. So the principal function of the UCP office is to collect all the property, monies, assets that are classified each year as abandoned "unclaimed" in their state, to report the same, deposit the same into the State's general fund "in many cases" and to pay claims as the public "account owners" become aware of the fact the unclaimed money is held by the state.
WRONG: The Unclaimed Property Holders, i.e. YOUR BANK.... do everything they can to contact you before sending your money into the State as unclaimed!
THE TRUTH: In 1980 when we first discovered unclaimed property was literally being hidden from the property owners, we found that the banks were converting interest bearing savings accounts to regular deposit accounts and service charging the accounts out of existence "if possible" with monthly maintenance fees. Thus little Johnnie's Savings account that was opened by Uncle Bob for $500.00 when Johnnie was born... is turned over to the State UCP with only $82.50 left in it. Ask your bank, your insurance company, your stock broker what they do to locate those customers with unclaimed accounts being reported to the State! See if that does not make your blood boil!
WRONG: If your father passes away and leaves Unclaimed Property behind, the State will be glad to write you a check as soon as they find you.
THE TRUTH: If your father passed away and left unclaimed money behind, you better be prepared to: first track down the account on your own or with help by an investigator or attorney. Second you better have two or three forms of ID, your Birth Certificate, your father's will, death certificate, estate documents, decree from the court as to the distribution of his estate, permission by your brothers and sisters and maybe more. This is NOT always an easy process and can take up to a year to collect in some cases.
QUESTION FOR YOU: OK, so I am just thinking out loud here. And this will NOT make me any friends in the state UCP offices. LOL However, imagine if you will that you owe the State of California a balance on your income tax form. Do you think they would have a problem finding YOU? Calling you up? Sending you a letter? Saying, hey you need to pay this bill? Strange how most states can find you when it is in their best interests and yet they can not find you when they have money to give to you!
Now... in all fairness.... SOME states are getting much better at helping their residents claim the money they hold for them. Some states are very proactive in various ways which are NOT mandated under the UCP laws of their state.
